How To Become A Personal Life Coach

Life coaching is a tremendously important job which deals with the quality of life people experience through out their lives. Although it is not governed by any state or educational body and does not require a degree a life coach has to have experience, understanding and the time to work with the person being coached. It is important for people who are thinking of becoming a life coach to first have a strong determination and self discipline.

A personal life coach should first self coach and reach a state of desired satisfaction in their own life before trying to help others. Although this sounds simple it will be the toughest case a life coach has because they are alone and have to face many trials, challenges, desires, bad habits, problematic people, personal feelings and the constant evil voice that usually leads one astray from what they have to do or gives them the feeling of needing to something undesirable in the long term.

In my personal experience waking up everyday in a positive manner and just staying positive no matter how difficult life gets or what problems it throws your way is the first big step in becoming a life coach and make no mistake it is perhaps one of the most difficult tasks in existence but for a life coach it is the one most necessary skill. This is because any person who comes to you for help will need the constant reassurance that one can make changes and two the coach has done it before with only a smile and determination. If a life coach that can not present a positive attitude at all times no matter how difficult the situation will convey a message false hope and failure to people seeking a way to improve their lives.

The next big step in becoming a life coach is experience because no matter how smart or nice a person is if they do not have the harsh experience of solving problems in life with no help other than a smile and determination they can not expect to coach another person to do something they have never done. However once these steps have been taken a life coach still needs some study such as professional communication because even if a coach has experience and a positive attitude if they can not communicate their ideas and wisdom, other people will not be able to communicate effectively leading to frustration and overall failure.

So a strong, professional and understanding method of communicating as well as exceptional listening skill are to be practiced and studied over a life time if one wants to be a life coach. After all most of the time the life coach has to listen carefully to the client and pick out weaknesses, key points, false points of view and stress of certain topics in order face them with the client and work them out, to change a caterpillar to a butterfly one could say. Overall once a life coach has these skills it is just a matter of working with people to make changes and learning together as you go.

Studying behavioural modification can also be a very helpful method of assisting clientele as well.

A successful Life Coach assists their subject in developing attainable life or career goals by applying value assessments techniques and helping the subject develop a strategy to reach these set goals successfully. To help you determine what goals you most desire, and help you to prioritize these goals, a Life Coach will begin by asking you specific questions geared towards honing in on which goals are most important to you and which ones you may be most successful at fulfilling.

These same questions will also help the Life Coach assess other ideals as well, such as what activities are most draining on your energy levels, which take up the most time in your day to day life, and which goals may require the most amount of life adjustment to accomplish. This will assist the Life Coach in establishing the hierarchy for your goals, and creating the life regime in which you will find the most success by diverting energy from some areas of your life in which you may over compensate, to areas which could use more attention and in which you may feel a greater sense of fulfillment.

For example, if you feel you would like to spend more time with your children, your Life Coach will assess other areas of your life, such as time spent on your career, or personal time, and work with you to draw time and energy from different areas of your life and create a plan in which this time can best be applied to maximize your time with your children. Or, on the reverse spectrum, if you are developing a business from home, and would like figure out how to make more time to focus on creating and establishing your business, but you feel your family responsibilities require the majority of your time, then a Life Coach can be a useful tool in determining how to successfully divert time from your family to focus on your new business, while maintaining a level of satisfaction (or even increasing your level of satisfaction) in both areas.

A good Life Coach knows that such a strategy requires considering the persons’ over all lifestyle, living habits, and personal needs. A successful strategy must be tailored to meet each individuals’ needs in order to ensure the client reaches their goals. Each increment of success is a key factor in maintaining a client’s confidence in themselves and what they are trying to achieve. They must believe that what they are trying to obtain is both worth while and and attainable; a good personal life coach will not only be able to instil these beliefs in their client, but also encourage them through their journey.

Although there is no regulatory standard required regarding schooling or training for becoming a life coach, many schools now offer different training programs or certifications that would assist in building a successful and marketable career in Life Coaching. In addition to the suggested afore mentioned schooling certifications available [sociology, life development, career counselling, and mentoring], other useful certifications for an individual considering the field of Life Coaching may also include psychology, positive adult development, and management consulting.
